The first permanent ice lounge in the US opened at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas in September. Run by the Minus 5 Group, a New Zealand-based company (its Auckland property is shown at right), the Mandalay lounge will feature the same handcrafted ice sculptures and ice couches. Guests don Minus 5-issued parkas and booties and are served an ice glass with an exotic vodka-based cocktail. Minus 5 is planning ice lounge openings in New York, Miami, Hawaii, and Los Angeles in the near future.

With a communal table, game tables, and oversized chairs, the lobby in the newly renovated Sheraton North Houston is designed to be a destination rather than a pass-through. Terminals in the lobby offer guests the Link @ Sheraton, which includes free Wi-Fi. Guests can e-mail, search the Web, research local attractions, and print boarding passes. TVs, daily newspapers, and food/beverage are also available. “We’ve gone from perhaps one or two people sitting in the lobby to 20 to 30, and it’s pretty much continuous throughout the day,” said Robert Kisker, general manager.
