There is no greater name in luxury in the Rocky Mountains than the Stein Ericksen Lodge. The 26-year-old property combines rustic comfort, Old World elegance, and luxurious details to create a one-of-a-kind, year-round escape.

The hotel’s design reflects the lodge’s namesake, Stein Eriksen of Norway, the Olympic Gold Medalist who envisioned a lodge on the slopes of the Wasatch Mountain range. The result of that vision, the 10.8-acre Stein Erickson Lodge, is located mid-mountain at the Deer Valley Resort’s Silver Lake Village, minutes from Park City, Utah. It features 68 suites and 120 guest rooms, all with custom furnishings, high-end artwork, and high-speed wireless Internet access, and many with stone fireplaces.

The property includes two restaurants, a luxury spa, a 10,000-bottle wine cellar where guests can sign up for wine seminars with trained sommeliers, and meeting and event space. The four-star Glitretind Restaurant serves traditional America fare and is acclaimed for its ambiance and high quality: the restaurant has earned Salt Lake’s award for best American fine dining and best wine list, Wine Spectator’s Award for Excellence, and the Zagat 2008 award for most romantic restaurant.

For more casual fare, the Troll Hallen Lounge is centered around giant fireplaces and mountainside views. Stein Erikson also offers custom chocolates made by its executive pastry chef. ForbesTraveler.com recently named Salt Lake City an up-and-coming culinary capital, and Stein Erikson’s restaurants were featured prominently.

“We do things a little bit differently in that we combine a classic ski-town sense of taste with a bit of whimsy that still has the fine dining element,” Zane Holmquist, executive chef at the Glitretind Restaurant told ForbesTraveler.com in February. “We want to make that link between the people’s memories of ski food from childhood.”

But one of the main draws for the lodge is its exclusive, Mobil Four- Star-rated spa, which is slated for expansion this year. The project will take the award-winning facility from 4,300 square feet to approximately 20,000 square feet, doubling the number of individual treatment rooms, increasing the size of the women’s and men’s locker rooms as well as adding separate relaxation rooms, expanding the fitness center with separate locker rooms, and building out the pool deck by approximately 2,000 square feet.

“Through our 26 years, we have consistently raised the bar when it comes to alpine hospitality, and expanding the spa by such a large measure further demonstrates our continued commitment to providing guests with the utmost level of service and pampering,” said Russ Olsen, CEO.

By the end of 2010, the new spa facility will boast 16 treatment rooms in the upper level, including two couple treatment rooms with a shared relaxation room and two wet treatment rooms. In addition, there will be expanded pedicure and manicure facilities and a new make-up and hair styling room.

“Whether guests are simply looking to unwind after a day of outdoor activities or seeking deep therapy to combat the high altitude and dry climate in Park City, the spa delivers heightened relaxation, rejuvenation, and overall enhanced wellness and will now do so on a much grander scale,” continued Olsen.

Well-deserved recognition
In 2008, Stein Erikson was recognized for the second time in a row with Mobil Travel Guide’s Five-Star rating, one of the hospitality industry’s most prestigious designations. It is the first and only Utah property with this distinction and one of only 44 hotels nationwide. Since 2003, the lodge has maintained a Five-Diamond rating from AAA, making it one of only 30 properties in the US to hold both.

In addition, Stein Erikson has earned a number of other awards. It’s one of Travel and Leisure’s top 500 hotels in the world, and it ranks consistently in Condé Nast’s reader’s lists: in 2007, those readers rated it first out of 50 North American ski resorts. The lodge also earned Smart Meeting’s Platinum Choice Award and Spa Finder’s Fifth Annual Reader’s Choice Award in 2006.

The team at this lodge, however, is focused on more just the property’s success. In February, Stein Erickson announced it would designate April 6 through April 12, 2009 as Giving Room Week; 5% of the lodge’s revenue from room rentals went to the Hunstman Cancer Institute’s Room to Heal campaign. Through this initiative, the lodge raised $50,000 of a total $100,000 commitment to the organization. Established in 1995, Huntsman Cancer Institute serves the needs of cancer patients and their families with research, education, and treatment. Its Room to Heal campaign will fund an expansion to double the hospital’s inpatient capacity from 50 beds to 100 beds and double existing imaging and radiation treatment facilities and operating rooms. The new facility will house the Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant and Myeloma Program and expanded Cancer Learning and Wellness Centers, as well as accommodate expanded clinical trials and enhance patient access to promising new treatments.

“Stein Eriksen lodge feels strongly about giving back to the community, and designating a special Giving Room Week is an exciting opportunity to help a truly worthwhile cause and organization,” said Olsen.
